Operational energy concerns how a building performs in use. Embodied energy and carbon concern the materials and construction required to create it. Both matter, and improvements in one should not create avoidable problems in the other.
Material comparisons need context
Mass, transport, binder content, durability, maintenance, end-of-life and local labour all affect the real environmental outcome.
The regulatory direction is clear
Australian building regulation continues to strengthen energy-efficiency expectations, while NSW is also increasing attention on upfront embodied carbon in major projects.
Buildability remains the test
A sustainable specification only creates value if it can be procured, detailed and installed reliably.
